That is, programs that run in the background like scanner applications, anti-virus, screensaver additions, or anything else that shows up in your system tray (the icons at the bottom right corner, next to the system clock).

Viruses or spyware loaded without your knowledge will also drastically reduce system performance and internet speed. By doing a system restore, or cleanup of installed software, you will enhance your system performance exponentially.
